Regina Temple Lists a Few Leadership Skills Important in The Healthcare Industry

All industries, including healthcare, depend on competent leaders to pave the way for success. Leaders in healthcare should have a range of tangible skills, along with the ability to manage business operations and people. As Regina Temple points out, being a healthcare leader requires a high degree of patience, flexibility to adapt to change and the ability to pivot when required. Healthcare professionals with important leadership skills are highly valued in hospitals, clinics, private practices as well as public services.

Regina Temple underlines the key leadership skills important in the healthcare industry

Healthcare professionals working in leadership roles have to bear a good deal of responsibility. They tend to influence the quality of care for patients, the business performance of their healthcare organization, and the overall team culture. The day-to-day functionality of a healthcare setting is significantly impacted by the processes and actions implemented by the leadership team. Hence, it is vital for leaders in the healthcare industry to have certain valuable skills, such as:

  • Integrity: Healthcare professionals have to deal with ethical and moral situations, in addition to sensitive information. It is expected of the healthcare staff to maintain the highest standards of respect and care for patients, and hence, leaders should set the tone for the whole team in order to uphold high standards of integrity.
  • Vision: Leaders in healthcare tend to lead the charge for setting team, business and patient goals. Without a proper vision, it would be difficult to set ambitious objectives and properly plan how the respective team members are going to achieve them. However, as leaders demonstrate vision to others and communicate effectively to the team members about how their role is connected to the vision, it provides everyone in the team with a sense of direction and encourages them to work towards it.
  • Empathy: Healthcare leaders frequently have to interact with vulnerable patients who are going through the process of diagnosis and dealing with severe health conditions. This can often be challenging as patients may feel uncertain, anxious and overwhelmed. To be a good healthcare leader, one should have the ability to show compassion to patients. Moreover, it is also vital for medical teams to have a leader they can freely speak to in case they face any challenges at work or require advice. Having empathic leaders is important for developing strong, trusting relationships, and enables healthcare organizations to provide a positive environment to all.
  • Adaptability: The domain of healthcare is changing and evolving continually. Right from dealing with widespread pandemic like Covid-19 to introducing digital health technology to their organizations, healthcare leaders should be able to face new situations and have the ability to adapt to evolving situations. They should be open to pivoting and embracing change whenever needed, in order to stay prepared for the uncertainty that can arise in the industry.

As Regina Temple points out, when it comes to interacting with patients and colleagues, having good communication skills is vital. All healthcare leaders need to have good communication skills to work collaboratively with other health professionals, lower the odds of medical errors and speak compassionately to speak with patients in high-stress settings.
