When Your Loved One Says ‘No’- In-Home Care

Desperate as you may for a caregiver, sometimes it becomes very hard to get someone whom the charges would accept. Many are the times you’d want to introduce them and the loved one rejects them; yes, they want you to be with them and not any other person. The problem here is, you may not have the time and therefore you must get a stranger. Thus, the transition is a bit challenging and you need tips on how to go about it; that is what this article seeks to offer, read through.

Begin gradually

Have the aide come for a few hours each week. Then you can add the hours as the loved one builds a relationship with the helper. You could even begin with the caregiver preparing food for them and sometimes feeding them, then gradually, increase the chores as you slowly withdraw, at one point, let them wash the clothes and let the charges receive them from the caregiver. This will build a bond between the two and very soon, they’d need less of you.

Pay attention to the reasons for not wanting in-home care and their fears

There is a reason behind their adamant rejection of in-home caregiver. Thus, you must give audience and seek to understand those fears. You may need to involve the loved ones in choosing the aide, doing this would make them feel involved in decision-making and therefore comfortable.

Make your loved ones understand that you’re the one in need of help, not them

No one wants to be told that he or she needs help; this is especially for people with disabilities. Thus, you need to express to them that you’re the one in need of help and not them, and this would help in maintaining their sense of dignity. Let them understand that by having the caregiver, you’ll not need to worry in case you are away from home.

Let the doctor prescribe it

Doctors are perceived as a figure of authority and therefore presenting a caregiver to them in the name of doctor’s prescription would make them give in easily. At least they know the doctor is a medical solution provider and their word is helpful.

Let the one to whom care is given know that it’s a free service

Sometimes, the reason as to why the loved one is adamant is when they know money is being spent on them and especially when it is their money. You must make it clear that this service is given free. This, therefore, may mean, you get family and friends to raise the money for maintenance. At least this would give them some comfort that they are not spending any money.

Tell your loved one that it is temporary

This is a perfect strategy for those who have a problem with their memory. Thus, they’ll easily forget what you told them yesterday. Tell them that the in-home caregiver would be there temporarily and thus by presenting the situation as short-term, you give the caregiver time to form a relationship and with time, they’ll be comfortable.

No one would want to expose themselves to strangers and that is the reason why those receiving care must be handled with care when you’re introducing a caregiv
